Lithium-ion batteries can cause fire – this is why they are considered dangerous goods and in particular damaged lithium-ion batteries are a considerable safety risk.

Storing lithium-ion batteries requires observing increased safety rules and their transportation is subject to strict regulations. The transport of damaged lithium-ion batteries is only permitted under specific conditions set out by national authorities (in Germany: BAM).

Regardless of the type or size of the lithium-ion battery involved CCR is ready to develop a safe and uncomplicated logistical solution, including recycling according to statutory requirements. This applies to the return of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries as well as damaged or critical units. For the latter we offer the following return solutions and services:

 

 

Solutions for damaged and critical industrial lithium-ion batteries <30kg

For damaged and critical lithium-ion batteries/modules/cells with a weight of up to 30 kilograms, such as batteries used in e-bikes, golf carts, electric tools, boats and solar systems we will offer a return system (currently approved by German BAM) for that customers can simply register.

Our services include:

  • Provide safety boxes with filling or extinguishing material  for safe storage of damaged and/or critical batteries ( Box-in-Box System)
     
  • Easy pick-up ordering: Online via CCR NET or via phone
     
  • Packaging check by the specially trained driver
     
  • Transport on specially equipped and authorized trucks according to dangerous goods regulations (ADR)
     
  • Transfer to certified recycling plant
     
  • Proof of volumes and recycling for submission to the relevant authorities
     

 

Solutions for damaged and critical industrial lithium-ion batteries >30kg

Together with manufacturers across Europe, we develop individual return solutions for batteries weighing over 30 kilograms (primarily from the automobile sector) while using a single container concept.
Here, we rely on years of experience with the established return systems for lithium-ion batteries. They help us plan and manage tailored return solutions based on the requirements of our customers.
On request, we accompany our customers in developing customized containers. Moreover, we help manufacturers secure the necessary agreements and organize safe recycling.

Our services include:

  • Set up of a comprehensive return system throughout Europe
     
  • Obtaining all necessary export licenses in case of transboundary waste shipments
     
  • Support obtaining the necessary agreements from national authorities (e.g. BAM-Festlegung)
     
  • Easy pick-up ordering: Online via CCR NET or via phone
     
  • Delivery of a container (from the CCR container pool) to the collection site
     
  • Takeover and packing of the batteries by specially trained staff

Packaging

Our containers and packaging have been particularly designed to safely handle end-of-life, damaged or critical lithium-ion batteries. Packaging consists of a specially designed metal container assigned to packaging group I plus the extinguishing agent.
Thus even the event of a thermal runaway in a battery would not put the immediate surroundings at risk.

The German autority (BAM) has already recognized the permissibility of this packing method.

 

We currently provide the following container types. Bigger sized containers are available soon.

Four or two smaller boxes for packing and storage of damaged or used lithium-ion batteries weighing up to 30kg, respectively up to 80kg; transport in bigger transport box.
